Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I make a grooming appointment?

A: If you are a new client, please first fill out our New Client Intake Form, then send us over a copy of your pet’s current vaccination records via email at MyCleanDogFrontDesk@hotmail.com or fax us at 319-804-2689. Once we have your records, give us a call and we can schedule your appointment. Sorry, no online scheduling.

Q: What vaccines do you require at my clean dog?

A: Per Iowa state law, we are required to have proof of Rabies, Distemper, and Parvo. We can only accept shots signed off by a vet. Self-administered vaccines are not valid for us. NOTE: While we do not require a Bordetella vaccine, we do still recommend it.

Q: Why does my pet need vaccines before booking an appointment at my clean dog?

A:  We are required by Iowa state law to have a copy of your pet’s Rabies, Distemper and Parvo vaccines on file. We require them prior to scheduling so we are able verify that the vaccines are in compliance. We don’t want to have to turn you away at your appointment time because we didn’t have the correct information.

Q: How long do appointments take at my clean dog?

A:  In general, a full haircut appointment on most smaller pets takes about 90 minutes (an hour and a half). It is common for larger pets to take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours. We can give you a more accurate estimate upon drop offf. We do ask that you do not return until we call you. The animals get excited because you're back and it makes it difficult (and sometimes dangerous!) to finish.

Q: I work during business hours. can I leave my pet all day?

A:  No. We are an in-and-out salon. We work on one pet at a time. When they are done, they get to go home. This type of grooming business is less stressful for your pet(s) and the groomers.

Q: Can I stay with my pet(s)?

A: No. For safety, we want your pet’s attention on us and their groom. We also enjoy taking that time to bond and really get to know each animal we are working with.

Q: Why is my pet nervous when I drop them off?

A: Your pet loves you! We often tell pet parents that it is just like dropping a human kid at daycare. At first, they might not want to go or they will stall and ask for extra hugs, but as soon as you leave, they realize their friends are here! They look to you for direction. If you are nervous, they act more nervous. The best thing to do is to be confident your pet is in good hands with the people who want the best for your pets, too!

q: How often should my pet get a haircut?

A: It depends on the type of pet you have. We usually anywhere between 4 and 8 weeks. Longer length haircuts should be done more frequently to prevent matting.

q: What if my dog has fleas?

A: Before getting any services, your dog needs to be on a preventative (Nextguard, Frontline, Capstar, etc.) to actively kill and prevent more fleas. After your dog has been on meds, we can schedule a groom/bath with a flea treatment. Our flea baths only kill what fleas are on them at the time of the bath. Any fleas still in the home can jump back on them. We recommend while your dog is with us, you disinfect your home. This means washing all of your bedding, any dog beds, vacuuming rugs, and spraying your home with pet safe flea spray.

Q: Do you express Anal Glands or Pluck ears?

A: The short answer is no. Both of these practices are usually unnecessary and can cause further issues for many pets. We recommend if your dog has an anal gland issue to see a vet where they can be expressed internally. We most often do not pull ear hair unless there is an abundance of it, it's matted, or there are chronic ear issues. Plucking ear hair causes microabrasions in the ear, which can open the dog to bacteria and infections. Plus it really does not feel great for your pet. We also suggest pets with ear issues consult a licensed vet.
